Hi friend,

I open my computer the other day and find myself in a familiar situation.

I’m staring at a blank Google doc wondering what the fuck I’m going to write for my next YouTube video.

It’s been a month since I posted and the idea of making a video feels like torture.

Brainstorming ideas, making the thumbnail & title, writing the script, filming, editing…I can’t be bothered.

And just as I’m about to slam my laptop shut, I remember a tip from my favourite book of all time: The 2 Minute Rule.

The purpose of The 2 Minute Rule is to help you stop procrastinating by making the task as easy as possible to start.

The goal is to complete the task in 2 minutes or less (hence, the name, The 2 Minute Rule).

So, instead of trying to make entire YouTube video, I ask myself, “What does a 2 minute version of this task look like?”

This simple reframe allows to me to realize that I don’t have to make an entire video right now. I can just work on it for 2 minutes (after all, 2 minutes of work is better than the 0 minutes of work I’ve put in over the last month).

So, I get started.

I decide that I’m just going to write the first few sentences of this script. Easy enough, right?

So I write one sentence.

Then another…

And another…

I look up from my computer and I realize I’ve been writing for 30 minutes.

And what’s crazier is that I actually want to keep writing…so I do.

Before I knew it, that same blank Google doc is now a completed script.

“That’s what I’ve been putting off for a month?!?”

I am continually humbled by the power of just getting started. It may be the most powerful productivity hack out there.

So, if you’re procrastinating on something right now, ask yourself what the 2 minute version of this task looks like.

Whatever it is, just start it.

And I can promise you, once you’ve done that, the hardest part is behind you.
